Day one of the 22nd Northern Junior Championship presented by the Golf Performance Center concluded on Tuesday afternoon at The Hartford Golf Club, with showers and breezy conditions providing a stern challenge for this elite field of competitors. The 36-hole stroke play championship is being contested August 5-7 and features players from nearly 30 different states and countries.

In the Girls Championship, three players sit atop the leaderboard – Jordan Levitt of Bedford, New York, Carys Fennessy of Dover, New Hampshire and Addison Claire Lee of Cupertino, California. Levitt finished birdie-eagle to jump into a share for the lead, holing out her 2nd shot on the par-4 18th. Fennessy played perhaps the most solid round of the group, making just two bogies matched with a pair of birdies for an even par round. Lee held the lead for much of the opening round, making a birdie on the difficult par-4 13th to jump to the top of the leaderboard. However, a bogey on the 17th dropped her into a three-way tie for the lead. All three leaders will play together in the final pairing and will have plenty of chasers, as a total of thirteen players are within four strokes of the lead.

Similarly, three players share the lead in the Boys Championship, as Elliott Spaulding of Freeport, Maine, Kellen Dean of Saratoga Springs, New York and Liam Maloney of Chester, New York all fired rounds of six under-par 65 to share the lead. Spaulding, who finished runner-up in the 2023 Northern Junior Championship, turned in a clean scorecard of six birdies and no bogies. Dean, who finished top 20 in last week’s Junior PGA Championship, played the stretch of holes #9-11 in four under-par to catapult up the leaderboard. Maloney completed the trio late in the day, playing his final ten holes in four under-par to secure his spot in the final pairing.

The low Connecticut players are currently Allison Bauer of Greenwich, who shot an opening round 74 to sit just three behind the lead, and Robby Rosati of Stratford, whose opening round of 67 has him just two back. Hartford Golf Club member Austin Perkins of West Hartford is just three back after an opening round 68.

The final round of the 2024 Northern Junior Championship begins tomorrow at 7:00am, with the leaders teeing off at 1:13 PM and 1:32 PM, respectively. Live hole-by-hole scoring will be available at NorthernJunior.com with frequent updates on Instagram (@NorthernJunior).
